omschrijving | Solid half-basket hilted sword. Owned by Sir Donald Anderson- Elder Brother of Trinity House. The hilt consists of a solid half-basket- with raised bars and a badge with a cross- the four quarters each carrying a ship (badge of Trinity House). There is a lion's-head pommel- the mane forming the back-piece- and a prominent tang button. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires and there is a folding flap to the hilt. The hilt has been pierced for a swordknot and swordknot is present (post-1891). There is a straight- tapering blade of Wilkinson type with bright and dull work decoration. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and chape- with a pointed- wide shoe and has ring suspension. There is a black man-made imitation leather carrying case. On the obverse of the blade is a proofmark consisting of the Star of David- within which is 'proved' and a star (on the shoulder)- ropework decoration- the British Royal coat of arms- a rayed bright plaque with knots- a foul anchor beneath a crown- and a rope surround- with oak and acorn pattern within. Engraved on reverse is 'GIEVES'- a rope surround- with oak and acorn pattern within- the mongram of 'EBR' with rayed crown above- and ropework with oak and acorn pattern within. This sword was presented- together with the following articles: frock coat; trousers- cap; sword belt; gloves - belonging to the Elder Brother of Trinity House.
