The folding flap on the reverse is pierced to connect with the catch on the top locket. The guard is pierced with a slot near the pommel and there are two holes near the top of the grip through which passes the swordknot. The black fish-skin grip is bound with three copper wires. There is a stepped pommel with slightly fluted back-piece- a short upturned quillon with disc terminal and a prominent tang button.
The blade is (Wilkinson) straight- flat-backed with a broad shallow fuller for one-third of its length and a spear point. The scabbard is black leather with two gilt lockets and a chape with pointed shoe. There is ring suspension (a buckle from the sword sling attached to the top ring)- the fittings have thread decoration. There is a 1891 pattern sword knot and an imitation black leather carrying case. On the obverse of the blade are floral scrolls with a foul anchor and crown above and a brass proofmark at shoulder.
