omschrijvingCutlass- the hilt of the cutlass consists of a sheet steel half-basket riveted to a small rectangular shell. The tang button is riveted over a brass nut and washer. The leather grip is bound with three turns of twisted wire. The steel blade is slightly curved and flat with much notched a edge. Engraved on the obverse of the blade is 'WHITES LONDON'. The scabbard is missing. Jonathan White was a sword-cutler in the Strand from 1780 to 1795 and it has been assumed that this cutlass is his work. The fact that the name is stamped on the blade would suggest a later date- but the form of the grip is of an earlier type. Swords for Sea Service states 'c1850' 'Probably a theatrical property'.
