omschrijvingSmall-sword of Civil Branch- Royal Navy (Purser). The gilt small-sword-type hilt has an olive pommel- rudimenatry pas d'ane and flat- plain shell with the reverse half-hinged. The black fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires and on the obverse side is a brass tablet engraved with crossed foul anchors. The prominent tang button is screwed to the tang. The blade is hollow and triangular. The obverse is engraved with 'John Salter/ Sword Cutler/ to H.R.H. the / Duke of Sussex/ 73 Strand London'- a scallop shell surrounded by foliage- crossed foul anchors surmounted by a crown- a naval trophy of buoy- gun- flag- a three-pronged grapnel- and foliage. The reverse is as the obverse- with the maker's name replaced by a flower and the grapnel omitted. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and chape- decorated with lines. The lockets each have a ring and the top locket has on the obverse 'SALTER/ SWORD CUTLER &c/ TO H.R.H. THE/ DUKE OF SUSSEX/ CORNER OF THE ADELPHI/ 75 STRAND/ LONDON'.
