omschrijvingSlotted hilted hanger- the hilt of the hanger consists of a narrow steel knuckle-guard- which broadens to the shoulder with two horizontal parallel cuts- one on each side. The dark green leather grip is spirally bound with a narrow strip of copper wire. The steel pommel is decorated with a leaf or foliage motif and has a prominent tang button; the leaf or foliage motif is carried on to the guard and on to the (5mm) ferrule. The ferrule is also decorated with striations. The curved flat steel blade is backed with two grooves; 1) broad- which reaches to within 13mm of the point and 2) narrow- which reaches to a false edge 178mm long. The obverse of the blade is decorated with engraved scallops and scrolls- a depiction of the starboard-quarter view of a seventeenth century warship flying the appropriate ensign at the stern- a captain's pennant at the maintop and a vane at the mizzen top- more scallops and scrolls- and a scallop supporting a trophy of cannon- flags- halberds and spears. The reverse of the blade is decorated with the same motifs as the obverse. The scabbard is missing. The hanger was described in the Royal United Services Institute catalogue of 1932 as being a hanger of 1740 or thereabouts but the ship's colours (on the blade) would seem to indicate an earlier date- probably the last two decades of the seventeenth century. It has been suggested that the blade is probably German and may be dated circa 1780. German blade-smiths were frequently conservative in the design that they engraved on blades and this would account for the appearance of the seventeenth century warship. The design of the blade together with the shape and lightness of weight of the hanger leads to the assumption that it was originally used at sea. This type of hanger disappeared around 1800.
