omschrijvingFive-ball hilted sword- as used by the Loyal Greenwich Volunteers. The hilt of the sword is of the five-ball type with an adam pommel. The guard and the side ring are now missing. The fluted ivory grip has a gilt band round its mid-point with an oval badge at the centre of the grip. The badge is decorated with the letters 'LGV' with a crown above. The letters refer to the Loyal Greenwich Volunteers. The straight steel blade has a broad groove running the whole length of the blade. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a crown over the Royal cypher 'GR' and a military trophy. The reverse of the blade is engraved in the same way as the obverse. The reverse of the blade is also engraved with the name 'J.J.Runkel'. On the 8th July 1803- at the resumption of the war at the end of the Peace of Amiens- Colonel Robert Campbell was commissioned to command the Loyal Greenwich Volunteers. It is not known whether the Loyal Greenwich Volunteers were in existence before this date and disbanded at the Peace.
