The gilt stirrup guard is chased and made in the form of a dolphin entwined with a laurel branch. There is an acanthus leaf on top of the quillon. The langets are embossed with a foul anchor motif. The sword has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece- the mane extending for a quarter of the length of the back-piece. The ivory grip has ridges to accommodate binding wires- which are now missing. There is a gilt band at the top of the grip- which is embossed with a floral motif. The straight steel blade is grooved throughout its length and has been damascened in blue and gold. The blade is decorated with alternate panels of damascening and bright work. The decoration on the obverse of the blade consists of foliage- a naval trophy- more foliage- and a foul anchor resting on foliage. The decoration on the reverse of the blade consists of a foul anchor- two panels of foliage- and a naval trophy resting on foliage. The black leather scabbard has a gilt locket with a ring and chape.
