| omschrijving | Solid half-basket hilted sword- which belonged to Admiral Robert Kerr (died 1886). The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt- solid half-basket guard- with raised bars and a crown and anchor badge. There is a folding flap on the inside of the guard with a hole to engage on the stud for locking the flap to the top locket. The sword has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece- the mane extends down one-third of the length of the back-piece. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires.
The curved- pipe-backed steel blade is much rusted. The obverse of the blade is engraved with a crown over a foul anchor motif- with foliage above and below. The reverse of the blade is engraved with a naval trophy consisting of a flag- an anchor and a buoy- with foliage above and below. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and rings- and chape. The reverse of the top locket is engraved with the words 'DRURY- Sword Cutler- 32 Strand- LONDON'. There are indications that a second ring was added to the top locket- presumably in 1847- and removed again- probably in 1856. The ring on the mid locket is also an addition- probably added in 1856. It is likely that an earlier ring had been removed in 1847- the locket being retained.
Admiral Robert Kerr entered the Royal Navy on the 2nd December 1819 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the 23rd August 1828. He became a Commander on the 28th June 1838; a Captain on the 1st January 1850; a Rear-Admiral (Ret'd.) on the 6th April 1866; a Vice-Admiral on the 30th April 1873 and an Admiral on the 21st March 1878. He died in 1886.
