omschrijvingSolid half-basket hilted dress sword- of the type worn by all Commissioned Officers below the Flag rank. The sword belonged to Sub-Lieutenant W.G.P. Brigstocke (died 1940) of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. The hilt of the sword consists of a gilt- solid half-basket guard with raised bars and a crown and anchor badge. There is a folding flap on the inside of the guard with a hole to take a pin on the top locket. The sword has a prominent tang button. The sword comes complete with a sword knot made of blue and gold cord with a barrel-shaped mound covered with blue and gold gimp- with blue bullion at the end. The sword has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece- the mane extending the length of the back-piece. The white fish-skin grip is of a very straight Wilkinson pattern- and is bound with three gilt wires. The flat-backed Wilkinson steel blade has a very faint curve and a spear point. The blade is engraved with the words 'Wilkinson Sword Co'- a twisted rope motif with a space to insert the owner's name- and above the Royal arms with supporters with the Latin motto 'Dieu et mon Droit' underneath. The back edge of the blade is engraved with '63336 Made in England'. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets and rings- with a pin on the reverse of the top locket to engage with the hole in the folding flap on the guard and a gilt chape. The reverse of top locket bears the initials 'W.G.P.B.'- which refer to Sub-Lieutenant W.G.P. Brigstocke (died 1940) of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
