omschrijvingThis sword is inscribed ‘La Fougeux 80Gs Trafalgar 21st Octr 1805’ and was surrendered by a French naval officer when the ‘Fougeux’ was captured by the British ‘Téméraire’ at Trafalgar. Lieutenant Fortescue Kennedy boarded the 80-gun French ship with a few men and within ten minutes took complete possession of the prize. She was later wrecked in the storm that followed the battle and almost all on board were lost including 30 men from the ‘Téméraire’ who formed her prize crew. Pierre Servaux- the master-at-arms of the ‘Fougueux’ wrote of her loss: ‘Everywhere one heard the cries of the wounded and the dying as well as the noise and shouts of insubordinate men who refused to man the pumps and only thought of themselves.’
