omschrijvingCurved bladed dirk- the hilt of the dirk consists of a lion's-head pommel and back-piece- the mane extending one-third of the length of the back-piece. The lower part of the white ivory grip is diamond knurled. The very curved steel blade is damascened in blue and gold. The blade is flat-backed. The scabbard is made from pierced gilt mounted on black leather. The gilt is pierced in two places to show the leather below. The scabbard has two rings for the attachment of belt slings. The obverse of the top locket is decorated with a shield consisting of crossed axes- lances- etc. The reverse of the top locket is engraved with the words 'J Salter 35- Strand Sword Cutler and Jeweller'. There is a centre oval panel on the obverse and reverse of the scabbard- which contains a depiction in relief of a foul anchor and cable motif. J. Salter had premises at 35- Strand- London from 1801-1824. This is dirk is thought to be a presentation weapon- having a damascened blade and an ornamental scabbard.
