omschrijvingSolid half-basket hilted sword- the hilt of the sword consists of gilt solid half-basket guard with raised bars and a crown and anchor badge. There is no folding/hinged flap. The sword a lions'-head pommel and back-piece- the mane extending one-third of the length of the back-piece. The sword knot consists of blue and gold rope; the rest of the knot is now missing. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three gilt wires. The curved steel blade has a pipe back and a double-edged spear point. The obverse of the blade bears the words 'Prosser Maker to the King and HRH the Lord High Admiral London'- and is decorated with the Royal arms- a lion and a crown motif. The maker's name is also etched on the reverse of the blade along with a crown and foul anchor motif. The black leather scabbard has two gilt lockets- rings and a chape. Embossed on the lockets and the chape are acorn and oak leaves. The bottom part of the chape is also decorated with a honeysuckle ornament. The top locket is engraved with the words 'Prosser. Maker to the King and Royal Family- London'. The sword was made in 1828- and the scabbard was refitted later. The National Maritime Museum has in its collection five swords which have no folding/hinged flaps- all made by Prosser- of which this is one.
