omschrijvingA rapid sketch capturing the effects of sunrise, from the 'Castilian'. The sea is sketched as a pale grey wash with brush strokes of dark grey, green and purple paint to indicate the movement of waves. The sky is marked at the horizon with a band of dark grey/purple colour and then a wavy line of the same colour to indicate cloud. Above this the sky is streaked in the centre with pink, red orange and yellow colour to indicate the light from the sun in the sky. Yellow light is also reflected on the surface of the water close to the horizon to indicate the reflections on the water. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting inscribed 'sunrise' 10 Nov 37', and with the artist's monogram bottom right, and 'Cas' verso.
