omschrijvingA sketch from the 'Castilian', showing the relationship between the sea and sky. In particular the artist has concentrated on the effects of light. The calm sea is shown as a purple and grey wash with small dark grey brush strokes to indicate waves. The sky at the horizon is shown as a layer of dark grey wash and above the artist shows the effects of the sun. It is visible as a brilliant white, thickly applied paint in the centre of the sky and above this the brilliance of the light is shown by broad sweeps of lemon- yellow paint interposed with grey brush strokes to indicate cloud. The reflections on the surface of the water are indicated by washes of yellow. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting is inscribed 'SR', '18 Feb 38', and with the artist's monogram bottom right, and 'Cas' verso.
