omschrijvingA sketch of the sea, probably made while the artist was at Corbiere in Jersey. Everett painted a large number of sketches showing the movement of waves approaching and breaking close to shore. He continually experimented with colour and form to achieve the desired effect. In this sketch the underside of the waves are painted with short diagonal hatching of darker colour. The crests of the waves are painted in a lighter tone and the spray is shown as a rhythmic pattern, captured by the wind. As a contrast with the dark sea, the sky is bright on the left through the use of yellow, cream, pink lilac and pale blue tones. Everett was very interested in the effects of light and representations of light in the sky and the relationship between the sea and the sky. He stayed at Corbiere from 13 January to 6 February 1928, to paint the constantly changing appearance of sea and sky. The sketch is inscribed 'Jersey' verso.
