omschrijvingA sketch showing a calm sea from the 'Castilian'. This rapid sketch shows the effects of light in the sky. The sea below is slate grey, darker close to the horizon with small dark grey brush strokes in the foreground indicating the effects of waves. At the horizon, the sky is indicated by a pale pink line which is broken on the right. Above this line a light grey mass indicates cloud, thicker and higher on the right. Above this the expanse of sky is painted a very pale yellow, almost white, interspersed by dashes of colour to indicate high-level cloud. The light is reflected in the middle of the sea by a layer of purple tinted paint. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938. This was his last journey to sea, probably because of World War II. The painting is inscribed with the artist's monogram bottom right, and 'Castilian 38' verso.
