omschrijvingJug transfer-printed in black on one side with a view of HMS ‘Agamemnon’ at anchor and the other with the Great Eastern under sail and steam. The prints are inscribed 'Agamemnon 91 guns' and ‘The Great Eastern "Leviathan" '. Shaped lip with rope scrolling and acorns around the top of the jug, both inside and out, and rope decoration on the scroll handle. The jug commemorates the first transatlantic submarine telegraph cable. The Agamemnon, Lyon's flagship during the Crimean War, made the first unsuccessful attempt in 1858, and the cable was laid successfully by the Great Eastern (originally built as Leviathan) in 1866.
