omschrijvingCommemorative silver ashtray for the opening of Cammell Laird's New Dry Dock, 1962. Circular ashtray, with a beaded edge and three depressions for cigarettes. It is engraved in the centre with the Bactrian camel motif of Cammell Laird & Co (Shipbuilders and Engineers) Ltd. It was presented to Mr John Lees, naval architect and member of NMM staff, at the formal opening of Cammell Laird's New Dry Dock at Birkenhead by HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent, on 17 April 1962. The naming and opening ceremony for the 950 foot long 'Princess Dock' marked the completion of the 1st phase of reconstruction and modernisation of the shipyard at Birkenhead. It was acquired together with the invitation, programme, menu (on which the dock is named 'Princess Dock' for the first time), seating list and newspaper cuttings relating to the opening. Laird, Son and Co of Birkenhead, and Johnson, Cammell & Co of Shefffield merged in 1903 to become Cammell Laird Shipbuilding Company.
