omschrijving | Electroplated table fork used on board British India Steam Navigation Company Line ships.
Plain four-tined fork engraved on top of the handle within a garter: 'B I S N Co SS PEMBA'. It is dated from electroplate mark.
SS 'Pemba' was launched in 1877 and scrapped at Bombay in 1903. The B.I.S.N. Co. was founded by William Mackinnon and registered in 1856 as the Calcutta and Burmah Steam Navigation Company (which in 1862 became the British India Steam Navigation Company). B.I and P & O Steam Navigation Company merged in 1914, but kept their separate identities until 1971 when all ships came under the parent P & O Company.
