omschrijvingMedway Sailing Barge Match trophy salver, 1959. Silver salver with a shaped double rim standing on three feet, the centre engraved: MEDWAY BARGE SAILING MATCH 1959. RESTRICTED STAYSAIL CLASS 1ST PRIZE PRESENTED BY THOMAS WATSON (SHIPPING) LIMITED'. It is stamped on the base 'MAPPIN & WEBB SHEFFIELD & LONDON'. The 'Memory' won the First Place at the 1959 Medway Barge match. The sailing barge 'Memory', 65 tons, Reg. No. 113758, was built for Fison's the Ipswich fertiliser company in 1904 by John & Herbert Cann at Harwich. She spent most of her working life between London and Ipswich. She was bought by the Sailing Barge Preservation Society in 1956 and won a number of prizes in Barge matches. 'Memory' carried her last commercial cargo in 1959, and following a collision on the Thames she was laid up at Lower Halstow. By 1964 she had been bought by Kemp & Beer Ltd of Maldon and used for sail training and charter work. In 1968 she was bought by the Fellowship Afloat Charitable Trust and used as a residential centre at Tollesbury, Essex. In March 1990 her interior was destroyed by fire, and she was relocated to the saltings at Tollesbury, where she still lies. The Fellowship Afloat Charitable Trust has the the barge’s wheel and a collection of photographs. The silver cup PLT0269 was also won by 'Memory' in 1959.
