omschrijvingYachting trophy won by 'Valkyrie', 1891. A large, two-handled cup and cover, the fluted waisted cover surmounted by a figure of Neptune with a trident in his left hand and supporting a dolphin in his right hand. On one side of the body is a yacht racing scene, the other is inscribed: 'PRESENTED BY HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN TO THE ROYAL SOUTHERN YACHT CLUB 1891 WON BY VALKYRIE'. The body and lid are decorated with panels of lotus ornament. On the body this ornament is enclosed by borders of tied reeds, with an outer border of applied paterae. The cup has two large vertical handles, a fluted base, and stands on a circular domed foot. The 56-ton cutter 'Valkyrie', the first of three notable racing yachts of that name, was designed by G. L. Watson and built in 1888 by J. C. Fay of Southampton. She was commissioned by the well-known politician and yachtsman the Earl of Dunraven (1841-1926) originally as a challenger for the America's Cup. Although this challenge never actually took place, under Lord Dunraven's ownership 'Valkyrie' was highly successful in the 1889, 1890 and 1891 seasons, winning many prizes with Captain Tom Diaper of Itchen as her sailing master. It was purchased by the Friends of the NMM.
