omschrijving | One of a pair of silver candlesticks commemorating the launch of HMS 'Feversham' in 1712. The other identical candlestick is numbered PLT0741.
Launching candlestick with octagonal facetted base, and baluster stem. The base has the crown and royal cypher of Queen Anne, and an inscription around the sides of the base reads: 'AT LAUNCHING HER MAJ'ts SHIP YE FEVERSHAM A 5th RATE 22d JULY 1712 BURTHEN 561 TUNS 40 GUNS 190 MEN, BUILT BY MR JOHN PHILLIPS MASTER SHIPWRIGHT AT PLYMOUTH*'.
This pair of candlesticks, presented to John Phillips, is recorded in 'An Account of the Plate which has been given as Rewards to the master Shipwrights' as 'One pr. of candlesticks & snuffers, 34oz 12 dwt. And 9s engraving (rate per ounce) 6s8 (value) £12.'
HMS ‘Feversham’ was ordered on 8 June 1711, named and launched on 22 July 1712 and came off the stocks on 22 August 1712. She was in the Mediterranean 1713-15, and in the West Indies 1721-22 and 1728-29. In 1740 she was rebuilt at Blackwall and finally sold in 1749 for £421.
