omschrijving | Bogus sauce tureen said to have been owned by Lord Nelson.
Silver tureen and cover of rounded oblong shape, standing on four ball feet with gadrooned rims and handles at each end. The lid has an aperture for a ladle and the lid handle is formed as a twig and leaf. The body of the tureen is inscribed with a monogram 'JIJ' and the lid is engraved in cursive script: 'Lobscous Dish. From Jervis to Nelson with fond affection'. Lobscous (lobscouse) is a sailor's meal of salt beef mixed with ship's biscuit.
The tureen was made four years after Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar, but even so the inscription is extremely unlikely.
