omschrijvingCakebasket owned by Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson (1758-1805). The coat of arms indicates that Nelson had it engraved after the Battle of Cape St Vincent in February 1797 and before the Battle of the Nile in August 1798. Plain oval cakebasket with a reeded rim and a reeded swing handle, standing on a small flared foot. Engraved inside is Nelson coat of arms without the chief in the shield, which was only added after the Battle of the Nile. The original coat of arms as a Knight including supporters and the mottoes 'FAITH AND WORKS', 'TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO' and a knight's helmet. Above the helmet is his newly acquired San Josef crest, inscribed 'St. Josef'. On one side is an additional small crest (not Nelson's) of a greyhound gorged with a mural crown and the motto 'ALTA SPERO'. The cakebasket is said to have been presented by Nelson to Captain Murray.
