omschrijving | The Patriotic Fund was founded at a meeting at Lloyd’s Coffee House at the Royal Exchange, London, in July 1803, following the breakdown of the Peace of Amiens. The Fund set up a national subscription, strongly supported by Lloyd’s members, which was used to vote money to those wounded in action, and to dependents of those killed, and also to give awards of merit in the form of money, silver and presentation swords. Between 1804 and 1809 sixty-six Patriotic Fund silver vases went to naval and military officers in recognition of distinguished services. Fifteen Patriotic Fund vases were awarded after the Battle of Trafalgar. Most were valued originally at £100, but there was also one larger £200 vase awarded posthumously, one £300 vase, and three magnificent £500 silver-gilt vases on additional plinths. See also PLT0033.
The Fund presented this £100 silver vase to James Nicoll Morris, captain of the ‘Colossus’, ‘for his Meritorious Services in contributing to the Signal victory obtained over the Combined Fleets of France and Spain, off Cape Trafalgar on the 21st of October 1805’.
