omschrijvingGold snuff box presented to Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Louis (1758-1807) by Ferdinand IV, King of Naples. Four colour gold rectangular snuff box with canted corners and hinged lid. The lid is embossed with an ornate monogram 'TL' and on either side there are bright-cut engraved urns and flowers. The borders of the top are made up of flowers and sprays of acorns and leaves. The base of the box has a central urn with cornucopiae, and the sides are decorated with panels of engraving, and classical urns in relief on the corners. Thomas Louis commanded the Minotaur at the Battle of the Nile. His granddaughter Miss Maria Hannah Louis bequeathed the box to Greenwich Hospital in 1905. A gold sword hilt, Order of St Ferdinand presented by Ferdinand IV and medals belonging to Thomas Louis had been stolen from the Painted Hall at Greenwich Hospital in 1900.
