omschrijvingOne of a pair of candlesticks which belonged to Mrs Elizabeth Cook, widow of Captain James Cook (1728-79). The candlestick has a square moulded base decorated with beading and acanthus leaves and engraved on one side with Cook's crest, a raised arm holding a pre-1801 Union Flag and the motto 'CIRCA ORBEM'. The pedestal stem is of square section with a narrow neck and removable socket lining. The base is weighted and covered with wood underneath. Cook's arms were granted posthumously to the family in 1785. The candlesticks were part of a collection of Cook relics given by Henry A. Baron to the Admiralty in the 1930s. Cook's sister Margaret married James Fleck, and their daughter Indiana married H. Jenkins of London, a chemist. Their daughter Mary Cook Jenkins married her cousin Henry A. Baron.
