omschrijvingThis Freedom box was presented to Captain Edward Berry (1768–1831) by the City of London in gratitude for his gallant command of the ‘Vanguard’, Nelson’s flagship, at the Battle of the Nile, 1 August, 1798. The oval gold box has a painted enamel miniature on the lid, showing the battle at the moment when the French flagship ‘L’Orient’ exploded. The base of the box is finely engraved with a broadside view of the ‘Vanguard’ under sail. Around the sides of the box are four enamel panels, painted with the coats of arms of the City of London and Edward Berry, his monogram, and a pyramid, crocodile and lion symbolizing the Battle of the Nile. Inside the lid is a long presentation inscription, which concludes that a Common Council of the City of London ‘Resolved unanimously that the Freedom of this City be presented to Captain Edward Berry in a Gold Box as a testimony of the high sense this court entertain of his gallant behaviour on the first day of August last’. The box was originally of 100 guineas value.
