omschrijvingCandelabrum, relic of Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936). Two-branched plated candelabrum with three candle sockets, two with removeable collars, and the central one with an additional finial. The serpentine branches are reeded, and there is gadrooned decoration on the collars and base. Beatty's lion crest is engraved on the central socket and on the stem. The candelabrum was broken by the explosion of a shell in the Admiral's cabin in HMS 'Lion' at the Battle of the Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915. Although it remains complete, the plating of the stem has been shattered below the collar. The base is inscribed: 'CANDELABRA, BROKEN BY EXPLOSION OF SHELL IN ADMIRAL'S CABIN AT DOGGER BANK'.
