omschrijvingFreedom casket presented to Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936) by the City of Bristol, 23 October 1919. Silver-gilt shaped casket with six enamelled plaques of views around Bristol. The domed lid is surmounted by a copper-gilt seated figure of Britannia. A capital 'B' is engraved on the back and front of the lid, and at the front are battle honours in a scroll: 'OSTEND JUTLAND HELIGOLAND ZEEBRUGGE'. A depiction of the Order of the Bath is engraved at one end of the lid, and the Royal Victorian Order at the other. On the front of the casket is the Bristol coat of arms enamelled on a separate panel, with the motto 'VIRTUTE ET INDUSTRIA'. Above the Bristol arms is an enamelled warship and below the Beatty arms with motto 'NON VI SED ARTE'. The back of the casket is inscribed 'PRESENTED TO ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET SIR DAVID BEATTY by the LORD MAYOR ALDERMEN AND BURGESSES OF THE CITY OF BRISTOL on his admission as Honorary Freeman OF THE CITY'. The corners are formed as sterns of ancient sailing vessels, one with a 'B' on the sail, two with the crest of Bristol (arms and scales) and the fourth ship is missing its sail. The inside is lined with pleated blue material and contains an illuminated Freedom scroll dated 23 October 1919.
