omschrijvingFreedom casket presented to Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936) by the City of Oxford, 25 June 1919. Silver-mounted ebonized and cedar-lined casket, the lid with Beatty's coat of arms in silver with the punning bees and beehive charge and motto 'NON VI SED ARTE', all within a laurel wreath and inscribed silver border. On the corners are winged lion masks, and claw feet. The sides and back are plain wood, and the front has the City of Oxford arms in silver and motto 'FORTIS EST VERITAS'. Border of lid is inscribed 'PRESENTED TO ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET, SIR DAVID BEATTY, OM., GCB., GCVO., DSO & ON HIS ADMISSION TO THE HONORARY FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF OXFORD THIS TWENTY FIFTH DAY OF JUNE, ONE THOUSAND NINE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN, ROBERT BUCKELL, KNIGHT, MAYOR'.
