omschrijving | Earthenware plaque in a maple veneered frame, transfer-printed with a starboard-broadside view of a paddle steamer inscribed 'STEAMER FORFARSHIRE'. The name is also shown in reverse on a pennant. Below the vessel is a fortified gateway (part of the arms of Forfar) with four standards each side including those bearing the arms of Dundee and Edinburgh. The mottoes of Dundee '[PRUDENTIA] ET CANDORE' and 'DEI DONUM' are legible. 'Forfarshire' 1836 was famously wrecked on the Farne Islands 7 September 1838. Grace Darling and her father William, Keeper of the Longstone lighthouse rescued the survivors.
