omschrijving | Soup plate, part of a service belonging to HRH the Duke of Clarence, later William IV (1765-1837). In the centre, surrounded by gold decoration is a grisaille painting showing a figure representing Hope, in classical dress, right breast bare. She is seated on a rock holding a small anchor in her left hand which rests on the rock. In the background, a view of the sea and a port quarter view of a ship under sail. The plate has a scalloped rim and a border painted in blue, gold and white. The service is often erroneously described as the 'Nelson Service' and said to depict Lady Hamilton's 'attitudes'. It is also referred to as the 'Hope Service'. The maker's mark 'Flight' with a crown and crescent is painted on the base.
