omschrijvingYellow earthenware jug. On one side, a black printed transfer depicting Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) in uniform flanked by trophies, inscribed on a ribbon above:'ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY' on pennants either side 'NILE' and 'TRAFALGAR', below 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON' and within a wreath 'VICTORY'. On the other side, a portrait of a curly haired young gentleman inscribed 'COL WARDEL'. Below the lip a portait of a young woman in a bonnet inscribed 'MISS TAYLOR'. These represent Colonel Gwyllym Lloyd Wardle MP (1762-1833) and Miss Mary Ann Taylor. Taylor accused the Duke of York's mistress, Mary Ann Clarke, of selling her influence with the Duke (at that time Commander in Chief) to army officers seeking promotion. Wardle introduced a motion in the house alleging corruption by the Duke in 1809 and enjoyed short-lived popularity.
