omschrijvingPearlware jug, transfer-printed in black with a circular portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with ships behind him and naval trophies below. Above the portrait is inscribed 'ADMIRAL NELSON', around it 'ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY'. Beneath the trophies is the inscription 'VICTORY'. One the other side a verse within a border of leaves with a skull and cross bones above and an urn below: 'In death's terrific icy arms,/The brave illustrious Nelson lies;/He's free from care and wars alarms/Sees not our tears or hears our sighs,/Cold is the heart where valour reign'd/Mute is the tongue that joy inspir'd:/Still is the arm that conquest gain'd;/And dim the eye that glory fir'd.' There is a sprig of flowers, one coloured red beneath the lip. Black lines are painted around the rim and handle, and the prints are coloured red, yellow and blue in overglaze enamels.
