omschrijving | Earthenware jug, with black painted rims, transfer-printed in black with a circular portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with ships behind him and naval trophies below. Above the portrait is inscribed 'ADMIRAL NELSON', around it 'ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY', and below the trophies 'VICTORY'. On the other side, a four line verse 'In death's terrific icy arms,/The brave illustrious Nelson lies;/He's free from care and wars alarms,/Sees not our tears or hears our sighs./Cold is the heart where valour reign'd/Mute is the tongue that joy inspir'd:/Still is the arm that conquest gain'd;/And dim the eye that glory fir'd.' A palm garland, skull and cross bones is printed above the verse, an urn amid withered branches below. A stylised basket of flowers and fruit is printed under the lip of the jug which has black painted rims.
