omschrijving | Earthenware jug with a moulded handle, transfer-printed in purple with a hand-painted rim and handle. Under the lip, a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) in uniform inscribed below 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON/England expects every man to do his Duty'. On one side of the jug, a battle plan of Trafalgar and the inscription 'BATTLE OF TREFALGAR (sic) with Refferences Gained by the British Fleet under Adm Ld Nelson over the combined Fleet of France and Spain on the 21 of Octr 1805 in which action the intrepid Nelson fell covered with Glory and renown. Born Septr 29 1758 Died Oct 21 1805 Aged 48 years' (age at death incorrect). Laurel branches are printed below. On the other side of the jug, a list of the British fleet '33 British vessels with 2288 Guns beat the Combined Fleet of France and Spain consisting of 43 sail and 2970 Guns, in which action 19 were taken and one blown up by the superior skill and bravery of the British Tars'. The image of Nelson is based on the engraving by J. Chapman, published in December 1798 (see PAD3884).
