omschrijvingSilver-mounted oak freedom box presented to Nelson by the Corporation of Thetford in Norfolk, after the Battle of the Nile, 1798. The wooden lid of the box has an oval silver cartouche engraved with a fort, surrounded by a trophy of flags, guns, anchors and other maritime equipment. The edges are mounted in silver, engraved with leaves. There is an engraved inscription on the silver lining inside the lid: ' The Gift of the Corporation of Thetford in Norfolk. To their Gallant Countryman Rear Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson KB (now Lord Nelson of the Nile) For his brilliant Services to his Country on the Glorious 1st of August, 1798'. The original vellum freedom document is also in the NMM (ADL/P/2).
