omschrijvingCast silver taperstick modelled as a sailor in contemporary seaman's costume of 1761. The sailor wears the typical wide trousers, a long unbuttoned jacket with clearly modelled back flaps, a frilled shirt, neckerchief, tricorn hat and buckled shoes. The right arm is raised and supports a leaf decorated candle socket. The figure stands on a rocaille and floral domed base. The figure would have probably originally been part of a pair depicting a sailor and his lass. Such a pair by Samuel Siervent, dated 1762, is known. The Cafe family of silversmiths specialised in making candlesticks.
