omschrijvingCeremonial trowel used at the completion of Somerset Dock, Malta, 1871. Silver-plated trowel with an ivory handle with a silver-plated mount at the end inscribed with a monogram 'BY' for 'Barbara Yelverton'. The blade is shaped as an elongated pointed acorn, with a representation of the acorn cup and stalk. The blade is engraved with an anchor and a Maltese cross and: 'The last Stone of the Somerset Dock AT MALTA Was laid by THE HONble BARBARA YELVERTON ON THE 16th FEBRY 1871'. The 427 feet long Somerset Dock was opened as Dock 3 at French Creek in 1871, and at that time was larger than any dock available to the Royal Navy at Portsmouth.
