omschrijvingMedal commemorating the attack on Belle Isle, 1674. Obverse: Head of King Louis XIV in a long wig with a small curl in front. Legend: 'LUDOVICUS MAGNUS REX CHRISTIANISSIMUS.' Reverse: France leaning on her shield sitting by the sea shore holding a cornucopia, two cupids playing at her feet; ships in the distance. Legend: 'TRANQUILLITAS ORAE MARITIMAE.' (Security on the sea coast.) Exergue: 'SPECTANTE NEC QUICQUAM AUDENTE CLASSE HOST . MAX . M . DC . LXXIIII.' (With a powerful hostile fleet looking on and not daring to do anything.) A Dutch fleet under Admiral van Tromp attempted to seize Belle Isle off the coast of France in 1674. A force of 8000 men were landed but had to withdraw after a few days.
