omschrijvingA sketch showing the view from the rocks near the water's edge at Le Croisic, France. There are rocks on the left and right and on the water. In the middle distance on the left is the profile of a sailing boat. The setting sun glows as a brilliant yellow and white orb low on the horizon and its reflection casts a vivid lemon light across the surface of the water. The waves are arranged as horizontal layers of colour. The sky is vivid pink, yellow and orange on the horizon. Through the use of colour Everett has focused on the visual relationship between coast, sea, boat and sky. During December 1921 he stayed at the Fort de L'Ocean hotel, Le Croisic, near St Lazaire, on the Loire-Atlantique. The hotel was positioned above the rocks and afforded a panoramic view of the sea. The only guest in the hotel, he sat in the hotel's glass verandah overlooking the sea and described it as one of the best places he had stayed and sketched. Everett was able to see the sun rise and set over the Atlantic. He frequently sailed to St Lazaire, and went on several trips in a four-masted barque called 'Hagomont', since he was friendly with the skipper. He also recorded visits to the fishing ports of Piriac, Pamic and Nantes.
